The Environmental Alliance – why?

The marketplace of ideas and services around sustainability is complex and difficult to navigate at a time when it is becoming critical for businesses to respond and plan effectively.

Low hanging fruit

Easy to implement changes tend to have been made by most organisations. The challenge is to plan an effective strategy for continuous improvement.

Energy security and costs

The opportunity to negotiate a more cost-effective energy tariff is currently not an option.

Political uncertainty

The policy agenda on energy, climate and environment is in flux.

Staff

Skills, capacity, welfare and retention can all be positively impacted by improved sustainability performance.

Supply chain demands

Supply chain demands can often require companies to demonstrate their environmental credentials.

Effects on asset value

Greener buildings are not only more environmentally friendly they are more valuable.

The problem

Standard advice is often insufficient

The internet is awash with advice but finding the right solutions for your business can be challenging. Significant issues can include:

Political leadership gap

There is no clear long-term environmental strategy at the national level.

Poor advice

A prevalence of poor / confusing advice and a lack of joined-up support.

Unregulated sectors

An unregulated environmental sector (energy, technology, etc.) which is often supplier or manufacturer-led, creating conflicts of interest.

Over-reliance

An over-reliance on retrofitting solutions and selling new kit, rather than improving the control and performance of what you have.

Skills and capacities deficit

Skills and capacities deficit in organisations.

Uncertainty

Uncertainty regarding optimal technology options.

The difference

You set the agenda

Many businesses have received limited advice with regards to improving energy efficiency and environmental performance. The focus of all businesses is their profitability; environmental sustainability has always been important, but perhaps not critical to business operation. Due to climate change and energy costs, it is now.

The Environmental Alliance puts your business needs at the centre and develops tailored solutions for you.

We are also actively engaging with a range of other organisations, including Bradford Council, Kirklees Council, North and Western Lancashire Chamber of Commerce and the University of Huddersfield.

We do not think the right support for local businesses is currently in place. Environmental advice is often confusing and there is a growing requirement for carefully tailored, business-specific advice. Bearing in mind the drivers and complexities of each and every business, there is a real need to develop creative environmental solutions in partnership, not in isolation.
